Vision

Learning becomes an experience that is culturally relevant, holistic, critical, and creative. WCU students and faculty, community children and educators, and the greater community/region benefit from the experience of engaged and interdisciplinary learning and service. Through the TIE program, learning and artistic expression strive to transform the learning experience through culturally diverse opportunities and promote social an environmental literacy.

Goals

The primary goal of the WCU Theatre in Education (TIE) program is to integrate arts learning with cultural and environmental literacy authenticated through experience and engagement. Specifically, students will examine, explore, and experience culture, history, legends, literature, arts, and communication through the performance and production of plays for young audiences.  

WCU students function as an educational model of a professional TIE company. They work with program faculty mentors and assume the responsibility for:

  • Directing and Performance
  • Technical Design & Production
  • Marketing and PR Campaigns
  • Educational Outreach through Theatre Arts Workshops

The TIE company will involve students from a variety of disciplines within the arts and education colleges:

  • College of Fine and Performing Arts
  • College of Education
  • Honors College

Community students have the opportunity to:

  • Participate in Theatre Arts Workshops on and off campus
  • Participate in TIE productions
  • Make Interdisciplinary learning connections through arts-based strategies

Community teachers collaborate with the TIE program directors to:

  • Access curriculum support materials that connect the TIE program with their classroom learning goals and standards
  • Participate in TIE workshops with their students
  • Participate in teacher TIE workshops to continue to utilize arts-based methods and strategies
