The University Players of Western Carolina University will open the 2007-08 theatre season with Larry Shue’s comedy “The Nerd” Sept. 26-30.

“The Nerd” tells the story of a Vietnam veteran named Willum Cubbert. Wounded in battle, Cubbert never saw the man who saved his life, Rick Steadman, and knows little about him except through letters the two have written each other over time. Forever indebted to Steadman, Cubbert invites him into his home in an attempt to thank him. When the ex-GI-turned-nerd shows up on Cubbert’s doorstep for an extended stay, Cubbert’s seemingly perfect life is destroyed, and he is taken on the ride of his life.

Directed by Stephen Michael Ayers, associate professor of theatre arts, the production will feature Anthony Giordano as Steadman. Giordano is a junior theatre major from Bryson City and has trained at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. Nathan Mason of Bryson City will star as Cubbert. Mason also is a junior theatre major and has appeared in Cherokee’s outdoor drama “Unto These Hills.”

Show times for evening performances are 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, through Saturday, Sept. 29, and 3 p.m. for the Sept. 29 and Sunday, Sept. 30, matinees.  All performances will be held in WCU’s Hoey Auditorium.
