Grant-writing workshop to be offered Sept. 27
9/5/2007 -

Western Carolina University will offer the second session of a grant-writing workshop, titled “Let’s Get a Grant,” from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in Room 143 of the Cordelia Camp Building.

The workshop will be led by nationally recognized grant writer Jack Smith and will cover personality styles of successful grant writers, grant-writing terms, key components of a proposal, differences between government and foundation grants, writing goals and objectives, developing a system to analyze grant activities, and completing online applications.

Smith will show participants the best ways to gain government and foundation funding for programs and projects. Participants also will receive boilerplate grant materials and will learn about accessing Internet resources.

“A first session this summer was full with a waiting list,” said Susan Fouts, director of continuing education at Western. “We’re bringing Jack Smith back to campus at the request of area agencies and the recommendation of previous attendees.”

Smith’s consulting practice has provided grant-writing services to more than 150 organizations, including the Huntington’s Disease Society of America, Catholic Charities of Greater Atlanta and Y-Clubs of Georgia. Smith has taught grant-writing skills for state governments and for agencies and clients of the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Energy and the Cherokee Nation. He also serves as an adjunct instructor at the University of Southern Maine, the University of Georgia, Emory University, Duke University and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Management Institute.

Registration is $69 before Friday, Sept. 14, and $89 from then until the Friday, Sept. 21 deadline.
