Students familiarize themselves with athletic training equipment.

Students must be formally admitted into the Athletic Training Program, a requirement which promotes quality education and ensures exceptional opportunities for hands-on learning under the supervision of a certified athletic trainer. Application is typically made during your second semester at WCU. Early exposure to the athletic training profession is emphasized, with students gaining valuable prerequisite classroom and clinical experience in their initial two semesters.

Criteria for Admission

1. Successfully complete HSCC 150 “Introduction to Athletic Training” with a grade of C+ or higher
2. Complete a minimum of fifty (50) hours of Athletic Training observation at WCU or one of its approved affiliate clinical sites under the direct supervision of an Approved Clinical Instructor.
3. Overall GPA of 2.75 or higher
4. Successfully complete the ATEP Admission Examination

1. Complete WCU Athletic Training Program (ATP) Application (PDF)
2. Two Letters of Recommendation (PDF) from WCU Approved Clinical Instructors
3. One Letter of Recommendation (PDF) from any of the following:

College Instructor/Professor
Clinical Instructor/Supervisor
Academic Advisor
Allied Health or Medical Professional

4. Completed WCU Physical Examination form (contact program director for a copy of this form) (not required for admission, must be completed prior to August 1)
5. Immunization Record
6. Hepatitis B Vaccination Series (must have second injection prior to August 1) or Signed Waiver (PDF)
7. Verification of Negative TB Test or Negative Chest X-Ray since January 1 of year of application
8. Official Academic Transcripts of all institutions attended (other than WCU)
9. Signed Technical Standards (PDF)
10. Signed Athletic Training Handbook Statement (PDF)
11. Signed Statement of General Requirements for ATEP

Deadline for applying to the Athletic Training Program is December 15 for early admission or April 15 for regular admission.
