Health information professionals improve healthcare by insuring that the best information is available when making healthcare decisions for current and future patients.
To become competent in the field of health information and qualify for a wide range of professional positions you must:
- Build a strong foundation in liberal studies, including communication, calculation, and critical thinking;
- Learn health care-specific knowledge and abilities in using information technologies, management skills, and health/medical knowledge
- Apply your HIA education in case studies, projects, and professional practice experiences.
Having built a strong general background during their first two years at the university, students then enter the professional phase of the program, taking curriculum courses emphasizing health information systems, systems design, organization and administration, fundamentals of clinical medicine, medical terminology, and medical classification systems. The practical and theoretical knowledge gained in these courses is integrated with hands-on practice in clinical settings at selected institutions.
