A registered dietitian (RD) integrates principles of food science, nutrition, biochemistry, physiology, and food service management to help individuals and groups maintain and improve their health.
RDs are employed by hospitals and health care providers, public and home health agencies, recreation and sport clubs, government agencies and programs, universities and research institutions, and by business and industry.
Through a carefully planned curriculum, WCU offers a B.S. in Nutrition and Dietetics, a minor, and a nutrition concentration at the master’s level. Some of the highlights of our program include:
- Small classes with dedicated faculty
- Student professional club
- Undergraduate research opportunities and clinical experience
- Interdisciplinary learning opportunities with other health science majors
- Easy transition into internship and master’s-level study for qualified students
B.S. graduates are eligible to apply for an internship. Upon completion, they are eligible to take the national certification exam to become an RD.
N.B. Students who complete the undergraduate nutrition major requirements MUST meet the requirements for and complete the RD internship at the master’s level in order to become a registered dietitian.
Because the American Dietetic Assocation (ADA) requires an internship and the responsibilities for dietitians are ever increasing, we strongly encourage our qualified undergraduates to continue into our graduate program and become registered dietitians.
