The partial phase of the lunar eclipse will begin about 4:51 a.m., and the total phase begins at 5:52 a.m., said Heckert. The moon will set as the sun rises while the eclipse is in progress, so the entire eclipse will not be visible from the eastern United States.
The next North American eclipse will be Thursday, Feb. 21, said Heckert.
The viewing is open to the public free of charge. Young children should be accompanied by an adult. If the skies are cloudy or rainy, the event will be canceled.
Parking at the airport is limited, so car-pooling is highly recommended.
To reach the Jackson County Airport, turn onto Little Savannah Road from N.C. Highway 107. Go approximately 1.5 miles and make a sharp right turn onto Airport Road.
