Dr. Shawn B. Collins received in 2008 his Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Rush University, College of Nursing in Chicago, IL. He is currently completing a PhD in Leadership from Andrews University in Michigan. Dr. Collins finished his anesthesia education in 1995 at the Erlanger Medical/University of Tennessee - Chattanooga anesthesia program in Chattanooga, TN. Dr. Collins has been involved with the WCU anesthesia program since its inception, fulfilling roles as faculty, assistant director and then director.

Dr. Collins is married and is the father of one son and one daughter. He is currently on faculty as an assistant professor at Western Carolina University in Candler, North Carolina. Over the past few years he has lectured nationally and internationally (Madrid, Spain; Phnom Penh, Cambodia; and Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam) on continuing education of nurse anesthetists in developing countries and evidence-based practice. He is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), and the International Federation of Nurse Anesthetists. Dr. Collins also serves on the nurse anesthesia steering committee for Health Volunteers Overseas.

Dr. Collins currently serves on the NBCRNA National Certification Examination Committee and has served as an advanced education nursing grant reviewer for the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Bureau of Health Professions. He currently resides in Mills River, North Carolina.
