Antonio Bonarrigo Nursing Scholarship

Born in Salem, New Jersey in 1927, Antonio Bonarrigo served in the US Army during World War II. He was hospitalized several times afterwards because of his experiences during the war. A reclusive person, he kept his job and worked faithfully. After his father died he took care of his mother until she passed away. He was a hardworking man who was devoted to his family. Bonarrigo died in 2001 at the age of 73.

Alumnus Nicholas Bonarrigo, ’50, in agreement with the Western Carolina University Foundation has established an endowed fund in memory of his brother, Antonio Bonarrigo, to provide scholarship support for deserving nursing students attending Western Carolina University.

Awards of approximately $500 each are available to assist two full-time pre-licensure nursing students with the payment of tuition, book rental, or other required fees.

Andrea Culpepper Scholarship

An award of approximately $400-$500 is available to assist one senior student in the pre-licensure program with the payment of tuition, book rental, or other required fees.

Mary K. Kneedler Scholarship

Awards of approximately $500 each are available to assist two senior students in the pre-licensure program with the payment of tuition, book rental, or other required fees.

Eligibility Criteria

Students enrolled in the pre-licensure nursing curriculum at Western Carolina University are eligible for consideration. Candidates should have a GPA of 3.00 or above on admission to the program and must provide two references and a completed application form. The recipient must acknowledge the receipt of their award annually to the designated donor/family representative.

Application materials are attached. The deadline for receipt of all materials is April 20, 2006. All materials must be sent to:

Selection Procedures

Selection will be based on need, overall ability, past achievement, and potential for success in the nursing field. The School of Nursing Scholarship Committee will recommend the recipients to the director of the School of Nursing. The director will then recommend the recipients to the dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences for final review and approval. Recipients will be notified in May.
