Although tuition and fees at Western’s School of Nursing are considerably lower than those at most comparable institutions, students often need and are encouraged to apply for scholarships and other assistance.

Incoming Students

If you are an incoming student, we recommend that you contact hospitals in your area and other community foundations that award scholarships. You cannot apply for our internal nursing scholarships until you are admitted to the university and enrolled in the WCU School of Nursing. We also recommend you contact the following organizations for information on financial aid:

NC Nurse Scholars, available from the CFNC Career Center (click on “Nursing Careers”)

North Carolina Foundation for Nursing

Scholarships for Undergraduate Pre-Licensure Students

Nurse Scholar’s Program (NSP)
The NSP provides scholarships of $3000-$5000 based on academic merit to nursing and pre-nursing students pledging to work in North Carolina. Applications are due in mid February. Information, applications, and specific deadlines can be found at www.cfnc.org/nursescholars.

Nurse Education Scholarship Loan Program (NESLP)
The NESLP provides loans of approximately $1200 per year to students enrolled in the pre-licensure program. These awards are based on financial need and cannot be given to students receiving Nurse Scholar’s funds.  Service as an RN in the state of North Carolina following graduation can forgive the loan. Applications are distributed by the School of Nursing to financial aid eligible pre-licensure nursing students in the fall semester of each year.

Nursing School Scholarships
School scholarship funds have been established for WCU nursing program students demonstrating academic achievement and financial need. For more information, visit Scholarships for Undergraduate Students.

Employer Scholarships
Many health care providers offer scholarships for current employees or nursing students who plan to work at their facilities following graduation.  Students are encouraged to inquire with employers in their area concerning these opportunities.

Military Opportunities
Nursing students planning to pursue a career with the military should contact service branch recruiters concerning scholarships and financial aid.
