BSN Pre-Licensure Program
The basic (pre-licensure) program prepares you to begin the practice of professional nursing. Upon graduating, you will be eligible to apply to sit for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing licensure examination for registered nurses (NCLEX-RN).

The pre-licensure program conducts theory classes on the Cullowhee campus during the junior year and on the Enka Campus of Asheville-Buncombe Technical (“A-B Tech”) Community College during the senior year. Clinical nursing experiences are held at health care agencies throughout western North Carolina for both years.

Admission to the Program

Before applying to the School of Nursing, all students MUST first apply and be accepted by WCU Admissions.

Application to the upper-division nursing major are due in early January of the sophomore year.  The application packet is available for download, on this website, beginning in November in the Nursing Forms and Guides.

Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA* of 2.75 and have completed three of the five required science courses. Prior to entering the program, accepted students must have completed at least 60 semester hours and met all prerequisites. Successful applicants to the major must also complete NSG 340 (“Basic Nursing Skills”) prior to their junior year. Additional information is vailable in the Pre-Nursing Handbook.

The admission process is highly competitive and is granted "top down" on the following criteria:  

  • Cumulative GPA* as reported by the respective institution(s) (25%). *This includes all undergraduate coursework completed at WCU and/or any other institution
  • SAT Verbal score (25%)
  • TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) exam (50%)
