Thorough Overviews

Encyclopedia of Social Work. 3 volumes plus supplements
This National Association of Social Workers publication is a great place to start social work research. It contains informative articles with bibliographies and suggested readings. The set is updated when needed. The most recent supplement was published in 2003 and contains entries for hate crimes and other topics.

The Encyclopedia of Child Abuse
Contains over 500 entries that vary in length from a sentence to several pages.  Includes definitions of medical and legal terms. The book is international in scope with cultural and national perspectives on what constitutes abuse.

Encyclopedia of Disability.  5 volumes
This extensive resource provides a cross-cultural and historical overview disabilities.  Volume 5 contains primary source documents. Entries provide websites and a bibliography for further reading.
