Prepare for Success
Your preparedness and willingness to study directly affect your chances for success in an engineering program – and your success is a goal we share!

You will need good grades to get into an engineering program, as our admission policy describes, but you don’t have to be a genius. You will need disciplined study habits, even if you haven’t needed them in high school.  Because engineers spend much of their time solving problems, a strong engineering candidate should enjoy and excel at problem solving. Enrich your problem solving know-how by taking as many math courses as your school offers, including calculus and trigonometry if available. You should also take lab science courses such as chemistry and physics.

Because engineers convey ideas graphically and may need to visualize products or processes in three dimensions, courses in graphics, drafting, or design are helpful as well. The most successful engineers know how to communicate effectively. Engineers generally work closely with teams of other engineers, management, and/or clientele throughout the development process. It is essential that engineering students work on building strong interpersonal, writing, and communications skills before entering the workplace.

Interview successful engineers you know, explore engineering websites or contact some through professional engineering societies. They are often happy to answer such questions as why they chose engineering, what preparation they think is most helpful, and what are the keys to success in an engineering program.

I goofed around a little in high school. Now I realize I want to get serious and apply to engineering school. Is it too late for me?

If you enjoy taking things apart and putting them back together as well as figuring out how things work, and are now serious about studying, you should do well once you get accepted into a program. The question is: Can you get in without high grades?  To increase your chances, you may want to take a few math and science courses at a community college before applying.  At WCU, students who are accepted into the engineering program are designated for the Freshman Engineering track (FENG) or Pre-Engineering track (PENG) depending on their preparedness.
