Student Research
At the laboratory, a wide range of opportunities exist for students to become involved and learn the documentary techniques useful to a variety of careers.

Many students build on their academic skills through fieldwork, completing ethnographic research projects in the area.

In recent years, a growing number of students have used these projects as the basis for internships and long-term research projects:
  • Amanda Moyer, Amanda Wright, and Joel Evans all completed internships at Western's Mountain Heritage Center.
  • Cam Bass completed an internship at Mud Dabber's Pottery in Waynesville.
  • Catherine Kennedy worked with the Friends of the Little Tennessee River.
  • Jessica Phelps completed participant-observation research with the Hare Krishnas of Asheville.
  • Amber Griffen worked with Cherokee corn-husk doll maker Polly Rattler.
