Professional Dress and Behavior
There are times in the course of the student’s academic career in teacher education where students are expected to observe standards of professional dress and behavior. Such times include the teacher education interview, all field experiences, and other noted occasions. Standards of professional dress and behavior refer to expectations for public school educators.
Professional dress for teacher candidates is clean, neat, and modest, and for teacher candidates at Western Carolina University, dress should not include blue jeans or visible body piercings (other than mainstream earrings) such as nose, tongue, or eyebrows.
Teacher candidates are required to observe the dress standards of host schools for teachers as a minimum. Special occasions may require special dress such as shorts for field days or other events and teacher candidates will rely on the host school personnel for guidance in special occasions.
Professional behavior for teacher candidates is prudent, responsible, and beyond reproach. Community expectations for public school teachers guide teacher candidates. Teacher candidates are expected to be models for children in language, conduct, and demeanor.
Teacher candidates are expected to comply with all laws of the state and to follow policies of the school for teachers regarding attendance and other behavior.
