Five students to participate in "Research in the Capital"
Five Western Carolina University students will join University of North Carolina system President Erskine Bowles and about 100 other students from UNC system schools on Tuesday, April 17, for “Research in the Capital,” an undergraduate research symposium held for the N.C. General Assembly in Raleigh.
- Carmen Batchelor of Cullowhee, a junior biology major presenting “Fragmentation of Hyaluronate, Purification of the Fragments, Preparation and Characterization of their Iron (III) Complexes.”
- Jan Carrier of Cullowhee, a junior in the humanities program majoring in English literature and communication, presenting “Eastern Band Cherokee Music.”
- Kevin Dunn of Arden, who received his bachelor’s degree in art at WCU last December, presenting “Cherokee Portrait Project.”
- Elizabeth Vinson of Asheville, a senior sociology major presenting “Onward Migration Differentials Among Hispanics and Non-Hispanic Blacks and Whites in the U.S., 1979-2002.”
- Kimberly Wepasnick of Charlotte, a senior geology major presenting “Getting to the Root of the Matter: How the Lower Crust Can Control Fault Locations and Spacing of Earthquake Zones.”
The students will be accompanied on the trip to Raleigh by David Butcher, chemistry professor and associate dean of WCU’s College of Arts and Sciences.
The five students chosen for the Raleigh event participate in paid undergraduate research supported by the National Conference on Undergraduate Research/Lancy Initiative, or by the University of North Carolina Undergraduate Research Opportunity Expansion Initiative, Butcher said.
“Participation in the Research in the Capital event with outstanding undergraduates from all the UNC institutions provides a unique opportunity for our excellent student researchers to discuss with their elected officials the significance of their work,” Butcher said.
A select group of participating students will be introduced in the House and Senate chambers during the Legislature’s evening session on Monday, April 16. WCU’s representative at those introductions will be Jan Carrier, Butcher said.
The symposium takes place each year in the Legislative Building to highlight the role of student research, scholarship and creative performance in undergraduate education, and its benefits for the state. Students meet with their legislative representatives and participate in a morning poster session to show their work to the representatives and their staff members.
