Awards and Recognition

The following awards describe the many opportunities to recognize individuals and student organizations for the hard work and dedication of many to fulfilling the mission and vision of an organization and contribution to WCU.

Individual Awards:

  • Advisor of the Year (Student Organization): Awarded to the student organization advisor who has gone above and beyond the basic expectations of an advisor and has made a significant contribution to both the individuals of the organization and the organization itself.
  • L.C. Carmody Advisor of the Year (Social Greek Organization): Awarded to the social Greek organization advisor who has gone above and beyond the basic expectations of an advisor and has made a significant contribution to both the individuals of the fraternity or sorority and the organization itself.
  • Catamount Spirit Award: Awarded to an individual who best exemplifies what it means to be a Catamount and show Catamount spirit every day. This individual excels both in and out of the classroom while bleeding purple and gold. MEOW! MEOW!
  • Distinguished Service Award: Awarded to a University Administrator, Faculty, or Staff member who goes above and beyond their job description for their outstanding support and betterment of the students at WCU.
  • Emerging Male/Female Leader of the Year:  Awarded to one rising sophomore or junior male and female who show great promise in areas of academics and leadership in and out of the classroom.
  • Greek Man/Woman of the Year: Awarded to the individuals who excel in areas of overall contributions to campus, the Greek community, and the advancement of the mission of Greek Life.
  • Outstanding New Initiate (Fraternity/Sorority): Awarded to one male and female new member (initiated during the 2010 – 2011 academic year) who excels in areas of overall contributions to campus, the Greek community, and the advancement of the mission of Greek Life.
  • Outstanding Student Leader (Male/Female/Graduate Student): Awarded to one male and female student of junior or senior status and one graduate student who have excelled in areas of academia and student involvement, has the ability to motivate and encourage others, and has made a significant impact on the WCU community.
  • Dr. Robert Caruso Freshman Leadership Institute (FLI) Scholarship Award: Awarded to a member of the Freshman Leadership Institute who exemplifies outstanding achievement, dedication, and service in their first year at WCU.
  • Student Employee of the Year: Awarded to a student who goes above and beyond their job description for the betterment of their place of employment and the WCU community.
  • Unsung Hero Award: Awarded to a fraternity and sorority member whose individual contributions behind the scenes in the Greek community has advanced the mission of Greek Life. Determined by the Office of Greek Life.

Student Organization Awards:

  • Organization of the Year: Awarded to a student organization, which through their activities, programs, and projects, has had a significant positive impact in the WCU and surrounding communities. This award is based on the quality of events held, amount of community service performed, inclusiveness of programs and events, and participation in other campus events. This organization will have demonstrated the initiative to further advance the collegiate experience of WCU students beyond the classroom.
  • Most Innovative Program:  Awarded to the student organization that best understands the current needs of the WCU student body and positively advances the WCU community through sponsoring the most creative and groundbreaking project or program.
  • Most Improved Organization: Awarded to the student organization that has taken significant steps in order to improve its overall level of effectiveness from one year to the next.

Social Greek Organization Awards:

  • Five Pillar Chapters: Awarded to fraternities and sororities that reach five pillar status through the GLAC Report. Determined by GLAC.
  • Chapter of the Year: Awarded to a fraternity and sorority, which through their activities, programs, and projects, has had a significant positive impact in the WCU and surrounding communities. This award is based on the quality of events held, amount of community service performed, inclusiveness of programs and events, and participation in other campus events. These organizations will have demonstrated the initiative to further advance the collegiate experience of WCU students beyond the classroom. Determined by GLAC.
  • Outstanding Chapter Service to the Community: Awarded to a fraternity and sorority whose commitment to serving the WCU and surrounding communities goes above and beyond their peers’.
  • Outstanding Chapter Commitment to Philanthropy: Awarded to a fraternity and sorority whose commitment to local and (inter)national philanthropic organizations goes above and beyond their peers’.
  • Most Improved Chapter: Awarded to the fraternity and sorority that has taken significant steps in order to improve its overall level of effectiveness from one year to the next.
  • Outstanding Chapter Academics: Awarded to the fraternity and sorority that has excelled academically during the 2010 calendar year. Determined by Greek Life Grade Reports.
  • Intramural Champions: Awarded to the fraternity and sorority who has exemplified good sportsmanship and athletic performance on and off the field. Determined by Campus Recreation.

Student and Social Greek Organization Awards:

  • Outstanding Campus Event: Awarded to the organization that showed exemplary skill in the development, promotion, execution of their event, and have shown a significant impact on the individuals of the WCU community.
  • Best New Organization: Awarded to the organization that, in its first year of existence at WCU, shows tremendous promise through its purpose, structure, and programs.
  • Cross-Cultural Program of the Year: Awarded to the organization that realizes no community can reach its fullest potential without celebrating and encouraging respect of diversity in its many forms. This program will have provided the WCU community with an educational and/or entertaining experience that focuses on diverse views, backgrounds, and raises awareness.
  • Catamount Collaboration Award: Awarded to two or more organizations (including departments) that have embraced the spirit of collaboration through co-sponsorship of an activity or event. Collaboration is about more than shared resources, it is also about shared vision, planning, and purpose of an event meant to reach a greater segment of WCU and the surrounding community.
