WCU is a University of North Carolina Campus
Jamaica Program - International
As part of its outreach program WCU has been involved in providing education and training programs for Jamaican teachers since the 1970s. In Jamaica there are a limited number of four-year institutions of higher education, enrollment is limited and admission is very competitive. In order to improve the qualifications of teachers in Jamaica and to enable them to obtain a bachelor's degree, WCU has designed a program for them.
Through the Jamaica-WCU Program, Jamaican teachers can earn a bachelor of science in education (BSED) degree in Middle Grades Education with a concentration in either School Counseling, School Administration, or in Special Education in three years of part time study.
A primary goal of the Jamaica-WCU Program is to upgrade the teaching qualifications of the Jamaican teachers to a baccalaureate level. A secondary goal is to provide Jamaican teachers with courses in an area of concentration which were not part of their three-year college program in Jamaica.
WCU also offers a Master's degree program through the Jamaica Program -- the MAED in educational supervision. For additional information, contact the Division of Educational Outreach at 1-800-928-4968.

Qualified Jamaican teachers are accepted into the program if they meet the following requirements: 1) each applicant must provide an official copy of a Jamaican Teaching Certificate or Diploma; and 2) each must provide an official Jamaican College transcript indicating a minimum GPA of 2.0. (A 2.0 GPA is required rather than a 2.5 GPA in recognition of the strict grading standards of the old British/Jamaican system.)
In recognition of completing the Jamaican Teachers' College program, students receive a block of 85 credits toward a WCU degree. Student records are initially screened at the WCU Office in Kingston. Final admission is awarded by WCU's College of Education and Allied Professions.
