Catamounts Advocating Harm Reduction (CAHR) is a psychoeducational program developed collaboratively through the Department of Student Community Ethics and the Counseling and Psychological Services Center. This program has been made possible through a grant from the Town of Sylva, North Carolina ABC Education and Rehabilitation funding program.
CAHR is a research based program that focuses on motivational interviewing, goal setting, alcohol and drug education, and risk management. This combination of approaches makes CAHR a more effective option for alcohol and drug intervention and education than a simple lecture style program. The program's content makes it most appropriate as a sanction for students that have multiple substance related conduct violations or those who demonstrate high risk behavior in relation to substance use. It is designed to be a "second tier" of sanctioning beyond the online educational programming provided through 3rd Millennium Classrooms.
