The board, as part of its regular quarterly meeting Friday, March 23, unanimously approved a multi-year lease arrangement with Sprint/Nextel that will permit the company to install small wireless antennas on the roof of Walker Residence Hall on the WCU campus.
“The antennas will be installed on the side of an existing elevator penthouse and will be undetectable from the ground,” Chuck Wooten, vice chancellor for administration and finance, told the trustees. “It should greatly improve cell phone service for the company’s customers not just on campus, but throughout the entire Cullowhee Valley.”
The lease agreement with Sprint/Nextel is similar to an arrangement in 2003 that enabled Verizon Wireless to install an antenna atop Scott Residence Hall.
Through the agreement approved by Western’s board, Sprint/Nextel will lease the rooftop space at the rate of $15,000 per year for an initial term of five years, with four renewable terms of five years each for a potential overall lease term of 25 years.
