Western Carolina University will host the sixth annual Gender Research Conference from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, in A.K. Hinds University Center, with activities focusing on the theme “Gender in the Arts.”

The keynote speaker will be Lori Belilove, artistic director of the Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation in New York. Belilove will discuss Isadora Duncan and perform interpretations of the Duncan repertoire in a presentation from 9 until 10:30 a.m.

Belilove was born in San Francisco and, as a teen, began her dance training in ballet, modern dance and yoga. She toured nationally and internationally as a soloist in concert halls, colleges, universities and dance festivals. Shortly after moving to New York in 1976, she founded the Isadora Duncan Foundation for Contemporary Dance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to extending the dream and the legacy of Duncan, considered by many to be the mother of modern dance.

Other presentations throughout the daylong conference will share research of a wide variety of WCU faculty and staff members, and by undergraduate and graduate students.

The conference is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, Women’s Studies Program, Women’s Center and the department of psychology.
