BIll GradisonBill Gradison (pictured at right), a member of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, a non-profit corporation created by Congress in 2002 following a series of high-profile accounting and bankruptcy scandals, will deliver a pair of presentations in the region on Wednesday, March 28, as a part of the speaker series of Western Carolina University’s College of Business.

Gradison will speak on “Sarbanes-Oxley: What’s Happened Since Enron and WorldCom?” at 2:30 p.m. in Room 143 of the Cordelia Camp Building on WCU’s campus in Cullowhee. The second presentation, “PCAOB: An Update,” will be given at 6 p.m. in Room 011 of Karpen Hall on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Both presentations are free and open to the public.

Gradison was appointed as a founding member of the Washington, D.C.-based PCAOB in 2002 by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Created through the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, a federal law, the PCAOB oversees the auditors of public companies in order to protect the interests of investors and the public interest in the preparation of fair audit reports.

The PCAOB includes five board members and a staff of more than 300. Gradison was reappointed to a new five-year term on the board in 2004, and he served as acting board chairman from December 2005 until July 2006.

Prior to joining the board, Gradison was senior public policy counselor with the law firm Patton Boggs. He previously held elected office for more than 30 years, including 18 years in Congress, where he was a ranking member of the House Budget Committee and the Health Subcommittee of the Committee on Ways and Means.

Gradison began his public service career in 1953 as assistant to the undersecretary of the Treasury. He also was a member of the Cincinnati City Council for 13 years, serving as vice mayor and mayor.

Gradison earned his bachelor’s degree at Yale University and master’s and doctoral degrees at Harvard Business School, where he later served on the faculty.
