What makes this program special?
The Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Secondary Education is a collaborative degree between the faculties in the College of Education and Allied Professions, and the College of Arts and Sciences. Degrees are offered in a specific discipline (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Art, Music, German or Spanish), which allows the student to study that discipline in depth and also earn a teaching license in North Carolina.
Are there any additional admission requirements?
Yes. Admission to WCU’s teacher education program in the sophomore year is dependent upon successful completion of EDCI 231; a grade-point average of 2.5 or above; satisfactory scores on the SAT, ACT or Praxis I; a three-page autobiography; and a personal interview.
What scholarship monies are available?
All students are considered for merit-based scholarships at the time of admission. Additional scholarships are available based on FAFSA information. The Teaching Fellows program is available to select North Carolina residents and provides $26,000 over four years to each participant selected with a requirement to teach in the state after graduation for each year of the scholarship. Out-of-state applicants may be eligible for the N.C. Teacher Incentive Program. N.C. TIP participants can attend Western for in-state tuition rates with a requirement to teach in the state for each year of the award after graduation.
What will I be able to do with this degree when I graduate?
You will be qualified to teach in public and private schools.
What are the professors like?
Many members of the program faculty are former primary and secondary school teachers and maintain a current teaching license in North Carolina. Our faculty joins with master teachers from the public schools to co-teach some courses. Faculty in our programs place high value on the student as learner, as well as future teacher.
What are the students in the program doing?
Upon completion of their degrees, our students enjoy a high placement rate in teaching jobs across the western region of North Carolina, as well as across the state.
Will I be able to participate in clubs and other extracurricular opportunities?
There are many opportunities for students to be involved in clubs and extracurricular activities, including membership in a student chapter of the National Education Association. Students are encouraged to take leadership roles in the various organizations on campus. Also, from their sophomore year forward, students are engaged in field experiences in public schools in the western region.
