What makes this program special?
Established in 1969, the School of Nursing provides the only BSN from a state-funded university in the western North Carolina region. Students are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN (national nursing licensure exam) after graduation. The School of Nursing is nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Are there any additional admission requirements?  
Students must apply to the School of Nursing in mid-January of their sophomore year. Prior to the beginning of the Nursing program in the fall of their junior year, students must have completed courses in anatomy and physiology (Biol 291& 292), inorganic and organic Chemistry (Chem 132 & 133), microbiology (HSCC 260), psychology (Psych 150), and basic nursing skills (Nsg 340). 

What scholarship monies are available?
All students are considered for merit-based scholarships at the time of admission. Additional scholarships are available based on FAFSA information. Several scholarships are available from the School of Nursing once a student has been accepted into the program.

What will I be able to do with this degree when I graduate?
There is a critical shortage of nurses nationwide. Nurses are in high demand and can find employment in all types of settings and specialties, all over the country.

What are the professors like?
Nursing professors have years of experience as clinicians and educators and hold advanced degrees in their areas of specialty.

What are the students in the program doing?
Students find employment in all types of health care settings. WCU nurses are in clinical and educational leadership positions nationwide. Many WCU nursing graduates pursue advanced degrees as family nurse practitioners, educators, administrators, and nurse anesthetists.

Will I be able to participate in internships, clubs and other extracurricular opportunities?
Students work in health care settings all over western North Carolina. Opportunities exist for internships and independent study in the student’s area of interest. Students who are very successful academically (based on a certain level of GPA) are invited to join Eta Psi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, the Honor Society for Nursing.
