WCU's Costa to discuss Darwin book in Nov. 23 presentation
11/18/2009 -

James Costa, professor of biology at Western Carolina University and director of the Highlands Biological Station, will read from and discuss his new book “The Annotated Origin: A Facsimile of the First Edition of ‘On the Origin of Species’” at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, in the Canterbury House of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Cullowhee.

Costa’s book was published to critical acclaim earlier this year. The program is free and open to the public.

Intended for the general public, the presentation will focus on the observations, discoveries and events that led to the publication 150 years ago this month of Charles Darwin’s classic “On the Origin of Species.”

Costa holds the title of H.F. and Katherine P. Robinson Professor of Biology at WCU. He is frequently invited to speak on Darwin, human evolution and insect sociality.

Costa recently returned from leading a tour in the Galapagos Islands for the Harvard Museum of Natural History in partnership with Linblad/National Geographic Expeditions.
