Advocacy:
The Dean’s Advisory Council:
- Helps foster relationships with industry, scientific and professional communities, and government,
- Communicates the strategic vision as well as the needs and priorities of the Kimmel School with the University Leadership, Alumni, Industry and other internal and external constituencies,
- Support the Kimmel School in fostering mutually beneficial relationships with industry, the engineering, construction, technology, scientific, alumni and professional communities, and state and federal governments.
Guidance:
The Dean’s Advisory Council:
- Helps the Kimmel School develop strategic goals, plans and initiate new programs,
- Provides an outside perspective to the leadership and faculty of the Kimmel School on the strategic direction of the School,
- Helps guide development of best practices to enhance the national visibility of Kimmel School, and
- Markets the Kimmel School to all groups outside of the University.
Perspective:
The Dean’s Advisory Council:
- Acts as a sounding board for the Dean's leadership, in reviewing, evaluating and implementing strategic plans, setting priorities, and consulting with the School leadership regarding issues related to the education, research and service missions of the School.
Support:
The Dean’s Advisory Council:
- Takes an active role in fund raising by providing endorsement, personal support, and help in soliciting prospective donors. This role is one of endorsement:
- providing contacts,
- helping secure financial resources through personal support as well as
- identifying, cultivating and soliciting prospective donors,
- helping guide presentation of the case in support of the needs and programs, students, and faculty.
Membership
Members of the Council are distinguished for their leadership and accomplishments, and are from universities, industry, professional societies, national laboratories, government agencies, and the international community. Membership on Dean’s Advisory Council is by invitation of the Dean. Prospective members of the Dean’s Advisory Council may be nominated by present members of the Council or by members of the Kimmel School faculty or staff, with final approval by the Dean. Members are selected based on exceptional ability to contribute to one or more of the Dean’s Advisory Council's objectives.
Structure
In addition to an executive committee, the Dean’s Advisory Council consists of standing committees that address strategic planning, industry-university partnerships, program review and assessment, outreach and external relations, alumni relations, and facilities and infrastructure.
Terms of Service & Size
Membership terms for the Dean’s Advisory Council are normally three years, with the option to renew at the discretion of the Dean. Upon completion of one or more active terms, members may be honored with Emeritus status. Emeritus members will receive most Dean’s Advisory Council communications but will not participate in regular meetings of the Council.
Organizational Structure & Governance
The Dean’s Advisory Council has a Chair and a Co-Chair, each serving three year terms, with the Co-Chair succeeding the Chair. Chair of Dean’s Advisory Council frequently communicates and coordinates with the Dean and the Executive Committee, in advance of Dean’s Advisory Council and Subcommittee meetings, to identify key issues and the most pertinent information in order to focus on efforts where it will be most productive. The Co-Chair will also act as the Kimmel School Campaign Coordinator.
Meetings
Dean’s Advisory Council normally meets twice a year, in the Spring and in the Fall. The Executive Committee of the council meets three to four times a year. The Fall meeting of the Executive Committee will be held sometime before the general meeting, which usually takes place in November. The Office of the Dean is responsible for arrangements and, in working with the chair, prepares the agenda for each meeting and mails it to all members of Dean’s Advisory Council prior to each meeting.
