Professional Practice Experiences (PPEs) are an important part of the curriculum and help students practice what theyve learned about the HIM profession. The HIA program requires four PPEs; one each semester of the major.
The first three PPEs include activities and assignments that are integrated across the HIA courses. Some activities include participation in a Red Cross Blood Drive, the Business Etiquette Dinner and Reception, a visit to a county Public Health Department to conduct an interview and prepare a notebook, and helping other Health Science programs with fitness assessments and recruitment.

The final PPE is out in the field consisting of one week in a specialty area and the other three weeks in an acute care hospital with a management focus. Students have enjoyed their experiences in a variety of locations, including all areas of North Carolina and across the Southeast. Therefore, students are not obligated to stay in the WCU area or North Carolina. Through these opportunities students will be able to work in a professional setting and get hands-on experience that can be part of their resume.
When students attend PPE activities, they are also required to dress professionally which is outlined in an HIA program standard. When students are out in the field they must positively represent WCU, the HIA program, and themselves.
