The Low Tech Ensemble at Western Carolina University will present a concert of gamelan music at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, in the recital hall of the Coulter Building on the WCU campus.

Admission is free to this student ensemble performance. After the concert, audience members are invited to come onstage and play the instruments.

The gamelan is an orchestra of tuned percussion instruments consisting of gongs, metallophones, zithers, xylophones and drums. Originating in Indonesia and coastal Southeast Asia, gamelan music has a role of establishing balance and harmony in rituals and social entertainment. The ensemble will perform on a Central Javanese gamelan in slendro tuning, which has a five-tone scale.
