Western Carolina University students, faculty, staff and family members will combine their efforts on Saturday, Oct. 24, for Make a Difference Day, an annual national day of helping others initiated by USA Weekend magazine.
Volunteers will participate in five projects in Jackson, Macon and Buncombe counties.
· REACH of Jackson County, Sylva – From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., volunteers will help with maintenance and beautification of a domestic violence shelter for women and children. Others will assist in the REACH Thrift Store.
· The Community Garden, Sylva – From 1 to 5 p.m., volunteers will help prepare the Community Garden, which is affiliated with the Community Table, for winter. Community Table is a nonprofit organization that has provided free meals to people in need since 1999.
· Smokey Mountain Elementary School, Whittier – From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., volunteers will help restore the school’s walking trail.
· The Franklin Main Street Program’s “PumpkinFest” – From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., volunteers will help supervise activities such as a pumpkin roll, pie-eating and costume contests, and a parade at the annual festival in downtown Franklin.
· Alzheimer’s Association (Western Carolina Chapter), Asheville – From 1 to 4 p.m., volunteers will assist in running the Mountain Area Memory Walk, an event aimed at raising awareness and funds for care, support and research efforts related to Alzheimer’s disease. The event will be held in Martin Luther King Jr. Park in downtown Asheville.
WCU has participated in Make a Difference Day since 2003.
“With this year’s event coinciding with the WCU Family Weekend, we expect a diverse group of volunteers, including family members,” said Jennifer Cooper, assistant director of service learning. “We’re happy to connect all of our volunteers with projects that help meet needs in our community.”
