Criminal Justice - Major

What makes this program special?
Our curriculum emphasizes the interdependence of theory and practice in addressing real-world problems. Our emphasis on application guided by scholarship provides a strong, interdisciplinary foundation for future criminal justice professionals. The focus for undergraduate students is to achieve mastery of fundamental academic competencies and a basic level of expertise in the field of criminal justice.

Are there any additional admission requirements?
No additional requirements are necessary beyond being accepted to WCU.

What scholarship monies are available?
All students are considered for merit-based scholarships at the time of admission. Additional scholarships are available based on FAFSA information.

What will I be able to do with this degree when I graduate?
Graduates of the Criminal Justice program pursue careers within the field of criminal justice, as well as non–criminal justice careers within the public and private sectors. Our curriculum prepares students for entry into the fields of law enforcement, investigations, corrections, security, courts, and forensic science. By utilizing their liberal arts and interdisciplinary social science education, many of our graduates find employment in areas outside of the field of criminal justice. Our curriculum also prepares students for advanced study at the graduate level or in law school.

What are the professors like?
Our faculty holds terminal degrees from some of the premier Criminal Justice programs within the nation. They also bring extensive professional experience into the classroom. Faculty members of the department are strongly committed to lifelong learning and professional development of our students and to facilitating their transition into the professional environment.

What are the students in the program doing?
Recent graduates are working in the fields of law enforcement, security, community corrections, counseling, and juvenile justice, as well as in other careers in government and business. We also have a number of students in law school and graduate programs. Previous graduates may be found practicing law; teaching at the community college and university levels; and in administrative positions of local, state and federal criminal justice agencies.

Will I be able to participate in internships, clubs and other extracurricular opportunities?
Yes, Criminal Justice students may join the Criminal Justice Club, which has a number of group activities each semester. Upper-level students may be invited to join our local chapter of the Alpha Phi Sigma Criminal Justice Honorary Society. Our students are also encouraged to participate in service learning activities, as well as internships. We also offer international semester and yearlong study abroad opportunities, as well as the popular British Studies Program each summer.
