Holiday Schedule
The State Personnel Commission permits educational institutions to adopt a holiday schedule that differs from the state-wide schedule in order to meet operational needs of the institutions.  Institutions may not grant additional paid holidays beyond the number authorized by the General Assembly.  The 2009 holiday schedule for Western Carolina University will be as follows:

NEW YEAR’S DAY 2009 - January 1, 2009 (Thursday)
(NOTE:  The University will remain closed on Friday, January 2, 2009)

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. HOLIDAY - January 19, 2009 (Monday)

GOOD FRIDAY - April 10, 2009 (Friday)

INDEPENDENCE DAY - July 3, 2009 (Friday)

LABOR DAY - September 7, 2009 (Monday)

THANKSGIVING - November 26-27, 2009 (Thursday and Friday)

CHRISTMAS BREAK - December 24 - 31, 2009 (Thursday - Thursday)

NEW YEAR’S DAY 2010 - January 1, 2010 (Friday)

The holidays at Christmas are obtained by combining the Memorial Day (May 25) and Veterans’ Day (November 11) holidays with the two holidays given for Christmas.  A third day for Christmas will not be given in 2009 because Christmas Day falls on a Friday; the General Assembly grants three (3) paid days at Christmas only when Christmas Day falls on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

PLEASE NOTE:  On December 30 and 31, 2009, employees in leave earning status have the option of using vacation or bonus leave, or leave without pay.  FLSA eligible employees (those subject to overtime) may also use compensatory time off for these days.  This will allow the University to close at the end of business on Wednesday, December 23, 2009, and remain closed until the opening of business on Monday, January 4, 2010.

This schedule will enable the University to lower building temperatures for the entire period and, thereby, achieve significant energy savings.  Building temperatures, except in areas where research or other essential operations require exceptions, will be lowered to approximately 55 degrees during the period the University is closed.  Requests for exceptions to this temperature level should be directed to Mr. Joe Walker, Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities Management.

Permanent and probationary employees who are required to work on a designated University holiday will be paid straight time plus holiday premium pay equal to one-half of their regular straight-time hourly rate for the hours worked on these holidays.  In addition, they will be given compensatory time off equal to the holiday hours worked.  Hourly employees and those on temporary staff appointments receive straight-time pay plus a premium of one-half straight-time pay for work on designated University holidays, but they are not given compensatory time off.

Questions concerning the 2009 University Holiday Schedule may be directed to the Office of Human Resources at 7218.
