Kimmel School Laptop Computer Requirement
The Kimmel School uses Virtual Computing Laboratories for instruction. All students enrolling for courses in the School must have a laptop computer that meets standard university networking and hardware configuration requirements. For more informaton on this requirement, please refer to the Undergraduate Catalog. Kimmel School Virtual Computing LaboratoryThe Virtual Computing Lab (VCL) system allows Kimmel School students to access software located in our classrooms and labs from anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day, all year long. This allows students to work on homework and class projects without having to come on campus to utilize one of the lab computers.
You can access the VCL system online here. A PDF with directions on how to log in can be found here. Note: The VCL system is only accessible by Kimmel School faculty, staff and currently enrolled students who have majors in the Kimmel School.
Kimmel School Student Laboratory Printer Use Policy
The Kimmel School has an established student printing policy and a printing management system that administers the use of all Kimmel School managed electronic laboratories and computing resources.
Under this policy, each student enrolled in the Kimmel School receives a fixed printing expense allocation at the beginning of the Fall Semester and an additional allocation at the beginning of the Spring Semester for use with Kimmel School managed printers. Any unused expense allocation remaining at the end of the fall term is available for use during the spring semester; however, all expense allocation balances are reset at the end of the summer term for all students. NB: These expense allocations are non-redeemable for cash and are independent of and non-transferrable to the University’s “Pay-for-Print” system.
When using Kimmel School printers covered by this policy, printing costs incurred are charged against the student’s expense allocation at a cost based on the printer being used, the paper size, whether the print is in color or black and white, etc. Printing in color and on specialty printers (e.g. engineering plotters) is charged at a higher rate than black and white. This system assists the Kimmel School in managing printing expenses as well as in accounting for the use, maintenance and replacement of student fee-funded resources and equipment within the School.
In the event that a student exceeds his or her printing expense allocation during a term, the student may request an increase in his or her printing expense allocation by contacting his or her instructor. Students in capstone courses are normally granted a higher printing expense allocation for the appropriate semester(s). After a review of printer usage by the requesting student, the appropriate Department Head normally approves or denies any printing expense allocation increase requests.
NB: Consistent with WCU Policies covering the use of computers and data communications, all use of Kimmel School managed electronic laboratories and computing resources is logged.
