History/Comments : The Monteiths' father, Elias, and his brother, Sam, operated a mercantile store near the present site of the Jackson Manufacturing Co, formerly Meade Corporation until the business failed several years later. Elias farmed a few years before becoming postmaster for the Dillsboro Post Office until his retirement. Edna, the oldest daughter, was the clerk at the Dillsboro Post Office for 45 years. Edith never worked away from home and lived in the three-story house located in Dillsboro until she died in 2001.

The fabrics appear to be 1930s-40s vintage, but the quilt was probably quilted in the 1960s or 70s. Notice the visible quilting lines by orange grease pencil or crayon. Only the outermost arch (the baseline) was marked.
