Fabric Type & Color : Cotton in purple, navy, blue, pink, and coral colors. Set and borders are polka-dot prints. Remnant of a glued label is still on a piece of cloth. Batting is cotton. Backing is an off-white feed sack with Trademark "Butternut/ Cow Image/Dairy Feed/54% Protein/Acme Mills/Hopkinsville, KY" and "Waynesville, NC" stamped on the sack.

Construction : Pieced by hand. Quilted by hand all over in a fan design at 4 stitches to the inch showing on the surface. Binding is backing brought to the front.

History/Comments : The Monteiths' father, Elias, and his brother, Sam, operated a mercantile store near the present site of the Jackson Manufacturing Co, formerly Meade Corporation until the business failed several years later. Elias farmed a few years before becoming postmaster for the Dillsboro Post Office until his retirement. Edna, the oldest daughter, was the clerk at the Dillsboro Post Office for 45 years. Edith never worked away from home and lived in the three-story house located in Dillsboro until she died in 2001.
