History/Comments : When she was a young girl, Elizabeth Bohan of St. Paul, Minnesota received this quilt to replace one lost in a house fire. Her mother probably made arrangements for having the quilt made, but Elizabeth is thought to have chosen the colors and pattern. Elizabeth's sister, Mary Bohan, inherited the quilt. It was given to the Mountain Heritage Center in 1995 to be used for educational purposes.
The differences in construction between this Midwestern quilt and the North Carolina quilts of the same era are interesting to note. This quilt was probably pieced and quilted by professional quilters. The quilt is thin (commercial batting) and heavily quilted (by the piece and with shell quilting in two borders). It was made as a "special" quilt, but ended up being used a lot as the owner traveled extensively with the American Red Cross.
