Date Range: 1900-1930

Fabric Type & Color: Cotton. Navy, brown, pink, beige, and red blueósome prints and plaids but mostly solids. Backing is cotton dyed brown with black walnut hulls.

Quilt Size: 65" x 70"

Block Size: 18" x 18"

Construction: Pieced by hand. Quilted by hand in concentric circles over the pieced rays in the sunburst block and in parallel lines in the background of the blocks and through the sashing at 5 stitches per inch showing on the surface. Quilting thread is dark brown.

Quiltmaker: Probably Rebecca Jane Pannell (b.18 Jan 1890 in Jackson County, d 17 Jan 1925; married John Pannell 12 Aug 1907)

Locale: Jackson County, NC

History/Comments: This quilt was packed away with other family items. Some of the print fabrics are from the late 1800s, but such a quilt might have been made in the early 1900s. Home-dyeing fabrics for quilts was quite common in late 19th and early 20th century North Carolina. The background fabrics might have all been dyed the same color of deep red, but some fabrics faded faster than others.
