Pattern: Garfield's Monument

Date Range: 1900-1930

Fabric Type and Color: Cotton prints. Red with white figure and white with a tiny black sprig. Binding is back to front. Backing is a white gauze-like cotton fabric. Batting is cotton.

Quilt Size: 70" x 72"

Block Size: 11" x 11"

Construction: Pieced by hand. Quilted by hand by the piece at 7 stitches to the inch showing on the surface.

Quiltmaker: Eunice Leona Taylor Hall (b 24 July 1868 in Buncombe County, d 23 Apr 1921; married Henry Steven Hall)

Locale: Buncombe County, NC

History/Comments: This might be the quilter's own adaptation of Garfield's Monument published by Ladies Art Co. of St. Louis, MO as early as 1889. The Ladies Art Co. Pattern #136 is slightly different in construction and color placement. The original also had a letter G appliqued to the base of the monument.
