Description: Introduces the diversity and history of quilts. Includes a quilt with historic designs;
quilt-related books; touchable samples; 4th grade curriculum-based activities for math,
English, and oral history; a computer
software program; and lots of supporting materials for teachers.

Appalachian Gardens - Traveling Trunk
For: Schools, grade 3
Length: 2-4 week loan
Description: Focuses on the natural and cultural history aspects of gardening in mountains. The trunk features curriculum-based activities, hands-on exercises, experiments, definitions, diagrams, worksheets, and crafts. Science activities contained within the trunk assist with understanding decomposition in the soil and the pollination of flowers. Special equipment includes a microscope to look at soil, flower, and insect parts; a butterfly pavilion for pollinator observation, and materials for a mason bee house for the schoolyard.

Description: Explores how our ancestors passed the time on the back porch or out in the yard. What stories did they tell, what games did they play, and what toys did they make? Try making some toys and playing with others.

Description: An exploration of candles, lamps, and lanterns. Experience tallow, beeswax, oil, and electric forms of lighting.

Description: Hear about the experience of a Union or Confederate soldier who discusses equipment, tactics, and the homefront during the Civil War.
