This Native American Student Organization has developed a united community on Western Carolina’s campus and encourages better involvement, increased outreach and also represents a strong educational background that is preserved at WCU. Members of Di-Ga-Li-I are mostly of Native American decent but anyone with a willingness to learn about Native American culture is welcome for membership. Di-Ga-Li-I hosts events throughout the academic year both on and off campus. These events are specifically based around various Native American subcultures whose tribes are strongly represented within this organization’s members. We hold a respectful community on the University’s campus, and are growing rapidly with a total of fifty members as of fall 2008. Di-Ga-Li-I exists to represent Native Americans, educate others about Native American cultures, continue to ensure Native Americans stay recognized and involved on campus and off, and most of all to let people know that we are here to stay as a group of hard-working individuals with a lot to offer on this campus and in the community.
Di-Ga-Li-I Members:
Members of Di-Ga-Li-I are all individuals of various academic backgrounds who have the same desires as discussed in this organization’s mission. To become a member of the organization, one has to get in contact with the Executive Board and receive the Di-Ga-Li-I emails, and attend at least one meeting. From there, they have to show a continued interest in the organization following reading the constitution and meeting with either/both the president and vice president of the organization to discuss their ideas and ability to add to the group, as well as share their personal background. From there they will be recognized at the next Di-Ga-Li-I meeting and affirm their willingness to obtain membership and also verbally agree to uphold the mission statement of Di-Ga-Li-I.
Di-Ga-Li-I Officers:
Within the Constitution of this Organization, it reads that there will be an Executive Council consisting of four student positions and a Head Advisor. All positions would be nominated towards and voted upon by the membership body of the organization, and a two-thirds majority vote would be necessary for a candidate to take office. In the Spring of 2009, the first groups of Officers were nominated upon for the 2009-2010 academic school year.
