Find Books

 

If you know which book you want, simply search the library catalog by title or author.  In addition to WCU’s expansive children’s and young adult book collection, located in the Curriculum Materials Center, ASU and UNCA also have children’s and young adult books.  Books from the other universities are can be requested online and are delivered every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. 

The Hunter Library Children’s Collection has a comprehensive collection of award-winning children’s and young adult books in the following categories: Newbery Award; Caldecott Medal; Coretta Scott King; and Pura Belpré, as well as many other award winning books

Databases

The following databases are very useful for selecting children’s and young adult books by topic, genre, grade level, and other criteria:

Database of Award Winning Children’s Literature (DAWCL)
An index to more than 7,000 award-winning children’s books representing 78 awards across six English-speaking countries.  The search features of this database allow users to find award-winning books by multiple criteria including, setting, historical period, ethnicity/nationality of protagonist, format, genre and more.

Novelist K-8
A readers' advisory service designed specifically for children in grades K-8. Books are searchable by author, title, series name, Lexile level (reading level), and plot (including character, topic, time period, and setting) to retrieve descriptions,  book reviews, discussion guides, and feature articles related to books of interest. It includes lists of award-winning fiction, book lists arranged by genre and subgenre, feature articles, thematic units, teacher resources, and more. 

Scholastic Teacher Book Wizard  
A database of more than 50,000 children’s and young adult books. The leveled search allows users to create reading lists based on reader interest, reading ability, and age level. Search by genre or for books with similar plots. A free registration process is required to use the "my book lists" feature.

Titlewave
Free registration required.  Offers multiple search features and a variety of thematic lists prepared by education professionals.  Click “collection development” to explore search parameters.  Click the “curriculum” tab for multiple standards-based booklists and popular subjects.
