Local high school students win honors at WCU's foreign language contest

Some 200 high school students from across Western North Carolina and from two schools in northeastern Georgia gathered at Western Carolina University on Tuesday, March 24, to test their knowledge of French and Spanish in the university’s 27th annual Foreign Language Contest.

The competition was sponsored by WCU’s department of modern foreign languages. Individuals and teams competed in the categories of music, quiz bowl, native speaker Spanish quiz bowl, skits, show and tell, poetry recitations, how-to, extemporaneous speaking and “Who am I?”

Students, faculty and staff from the modern foreign languages department, along with volunteers from other departments on campus, served as judges.

Participating high schools included Enka, Franklin, Mitchell, North Henderson, Pisgah, Rabun County (Ga.), Rabun Gap-Nacoochee (Ga.), Tuscola and West Henderson.

French music: First, West Henderson; second, North Henderson.

Spanish music: First, West Henderson; second, Rabun Gap-Nacoochee.

French skits: First, Rabun Gap-Nacoochee; second, Rabun County.

French show and tell: First, Yaneli Padron, West Henderson; second, Carlos Maldonado, Enka.

Spanish show and tell: First, Samit Pate, North Henderson; second, Elizabeth Huntley, West Henderson.

French how-to: First, John Duilfir, Rabun Gap-Nacoochee; second, Sara Lemes, Rabun Gap-Nacoochee.

Spanish how-to: First, Arham Khan, North Henderson; second, Conrad Hillman, North Henderson.

French extemporaneous speaking (level 4): First, Austin Barber, Rabun Gap-Nacoochee.

Spanish extemporaneous speaking (level 4): First, Robyn Game, North Henderson; second, Jacob Martinez, Mitchell.

French extemporaneous speaking (level 5): First, Craig Anderson, Rabun Gap-Nacoochee; second, Kelley Jones, Rabun Gap-Nacoochee.

Spanish extemporaneous speaking (level 5): First, Jeremy Hickman, North Henderson; second, Shianne Murray, Mitchell.

French poetry recitation: First, Olivia Schott, West Henderson; second, Alex Armor, Rabun Gap-Nacoochee.

Spanish poetry recitation: First, Ana Maria Balta, Rabun Gap-Nacoochee; second, Elizabeth Crotts, Rabun Gap-Nacoochee.

Spanish native speaker poetry recitation: First, Zulema Saure, West Henderson; second, Katherine Muniz, Rabun Gap-Nacoochee.
