Did You Know?

  • In 2009 alone , WCU generated 2,522,284.8 lbs of trash.
  • WCU started recycling in 1990.
  • Last year, WCU diverted 438,233 lbs of paper, glass, plastic and aluminum from the landfill!
  • While cardboard and mixed paper are the heaviest of WCU’s recyclables, plastic bottles take up the most space.
  • WCU recycles ALL paper products except: soiled food  or beverage containers (ex. used coffee cups and pizza boxes), carbon paper, and wax-coated cardboard.
  • Courtyard Dining Center recycles 90,000 lbs of food scraps a year!  (Excess food is collected and stored by the cafeteria and a hog farmer from Macon Co. comes to WCU several times a week and collects it to feed his hogs.)
  • WCU’s recyclables are:

  • Collected daily and stored in roll-off containers near WCU’s Print Shop.
  • Once full, these bins are hauled off to the Jackson County transfer station where they are mixed with the recycling from the Staffed     Recycling Centers (SRC’s) located around the county.
  • Jackson County ships all this material (including WCU’s recyclables) to be processed in Asheville.
