Western Carolina University’s Mountain Heritage Center is offering a pair of programs on Sunday, March 4, that has a common theme – weaving.
“Coverlet Discovery Afternoon” will be held at the museum from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Local residents are encouraged to bring their hand-woven coverlets to the center, where textile experts Susan Morgan Leveille and Cassie Dickson will help the owners discover and document weaving information about their keepsakes.
Museum staff members will make a digital photograph of each coverlet, and the photo and information will provide a valuable record for the owners to keep, said Suzanne McDowell, Mountain Heritage Center curator.
Leveille has been a weaver for most of her life, and has taught weaving for 32 years. Dickson has been weaving coverlets for 30 years.
The program is being held in conjunction with the new museum exhibit “Airing of the Coverlets,” which will be on display through Thursday, April 5.
The second program, set for 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on March 4, is an Arti-Facts! program that will allow children to learn about the skills involved in the craft of weaving. Museum staff will lead the children through each step of the weaving process: warping the loom, picking colors and patterns, and weaving. Each participant will get to take home a small loom and a sample of material created on the loom.
Designed for children ages 6 through 12, Arti-Facts! programs explore the region’s natural and cultural heritage. Attendance is free, but registration is required. Parents are invited to attend the program with their children.
The Mountain Heritage Center is located on the ground floor of WCU’s H.F. Robinson Administration Building. To make reservations for the Arti-Facts! program, or for more information about either program, contact the museum at (828) 227-7129.
