Josefina Niggli (1910-1983) was a playwright, novelist, and director of drama and journalism instructor at Western Carolina University for twenty years.  Born in Monterrey, Mexico, Niggli's family later settled in San Antonio, Texas.  In 1956 she joined the WCU faculty and remained until her retirement in 1975.  Niggli gained a reputation with her one-act plays, several of which appeared separately - The Red Velvet Goat (1938) and Sunday Cost Five Pesos (1939) - as well as in anthologies.  Other works included Mexican Village (1945) and Step Down, Elder Brother.  The collection contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, teaching notes, story ideas and notes, drafts of manuscripts, and personal or teaching journals.
