Frequently Asked Questions About Chat Reference
Will I need to wait to chat with a librarian?
IM questions are taken in a first-come-first-served order. Sometimes desk staff will be busy helping patrons in person at the desk. As an alternative to using our chat service, please feel free to email us, call the Reference Desk at (828) 227-7465 or Toll-free: (866) 928-5424, or visit the Reference Desk for assistance.
Need help after the Reference Desk is closed?
NC Knows is staffed by librarians around the country and is available 24 hours a day, every day!
How do I chat with a librarian?
Open a new message, enter our screen name in the To: field, and start typing your message. Or, add us to your contacts list, double-click on the screen name to open an IM window, then type your message.
I don't use Instant Messenger. How do I get started?
Sign up for and download one of the Instant Messenger services. Fill out a quick, easy Web form, choose a screen name, and start using IM in 1-2 minutes.
If you prefer to IM from inside your browser, use the web version of one of the services.
Restrictions on downloading software to your computer?
Use the web version of one of the services.
What about privacy?
The library will save the transcript of your chat session for a limited period of time. We may occasionally use transcripts for internal library training purposes. Any identifying patron information will be stripped away before the transcripts are used in training. We will make every effort to protect your privacy. Information you provide will remain confidential unless disclosure is required by state or federal law.
Please feel free to email us with any other questions you may have about this service.
