Understanding a Citation in PubMed

Once you choose articles you want to see in full text you must then figure out where to find them. Unless there is a working direct link to full text accompanying the citation for an article you want, you will need to be able to understand how to use citations to find the full text of articles.

For instance, I want to find the full text of an article I found while searching PubMed, "Aging, nutrition and immune function." The citation of the article reads:

J Nutr Health Aging. 2004;8(1):2-6.

Since the title of the journal is not fully spelled out, I would copy and paste the journal's abbreviated title (J Nutr Health Aging) into PubMed's Journal's Database (listed on the left hand side of the PubMed search screen under PubMed services) and hit Go. This search would tell me that the full title of the journal is

The Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging

A period (.) separates the journal's title from the next part of the citation. The next part of the citation (2004) gives me the date when the article was published. This date format varies depending upon the journal in question. Some journals may only give the year of publication or the year and month of publication.

A semicolon (;) separates the publication date from the next part of the citation. The next part of the citation (8(1)) gives the volume, and if applicable, the issue number, of the journal. The volume number comes first, followed by the issue number (if applicable).

A colon (:) separates the volume and issue numbers from the next part of the citation. The next part of the citation (2-6) gives the pages on which the article is found.

By putting this information together, I learn that the citation J Nutr Health Aging. 2004;8(1):2-6 tells me the article can be found in the 2004 edition of The Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging, volume 38, issue 1, on pages 2 through 6.

I would then search the Library Catalog using the Title search to find out if I can get this journal in Hunter Library or if I need to request it from another source.
