WCU is a University of North Carolina Campus
Library Services Handout from e-Learning Retreat, 2006

Hunter Library Library Services

It is important to give students guidance in finding, evaluating, and using information effectively and ethically. The library website (http://www.wcu.edu/library) provides a wealth of resources for students who are seeking quality information.

1) ID#s

In order to access databases from off-campus, order items via Interlibrary Loan and ABC Express, renew books online, etc., students must have their WCU ID number.  Please make sure your students have their WCU ID number.

2) Help is available!

Reference Assistance – reference help is available to individuals off-campus via toll-free telephone and email: (866) 928-5424; askalibrn@email.wcu.edu

Information Literacy/Library Instruction – Librarians will travel to off-campus sites, participate in WebCT classes, and design online handouts for classes. If you are on the Cullowhee campus, library instruction is offered in Hunter Library’s electronic classroom or another classroom on campus.

Each department and program has a library liaison who serves as a contact person for your library needs.

Research Guides are available on the library website to assist with research in a variety of programs and subjects.  Help, tips, and tutorials cover challenges such as identifying primary sources and evaluating websites.

3) Databases

The library offers over 100 databases online listed alphabetically and by program. These databases provide journal articles and other resources that may not be found for free via an Internet search engine (such as Google).

Article databases that have a lot of full-text articles include Academic Search Premier, JSTOR, and LexisNexis Academic. Many other databases are article indexes that link to WebBridge, a service that  informs the user if the library offers the item in full text (online or a print copy in the library).

Other databases include NetLibrary (e-books and audio books), Oxford Reference Online: Premium Collection (online reference sources), and ARTstor  (images database).

4) Library Catalog

Look up the holdings of the libraries at WCU, ASU, and UNCA. WCU students have access to any “electronic version” of a resource available through WCU. Want to know if we have electronic access to a particular journal?  Do a periodical title search in the Library catalog.

5) Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Interlibrary Loan is a free service for WCU students and faculty.  For more information about this service, go to the Interlibrary Loan page, or Library Services for Remote Users.

6) Persistent links and WebCT

To put any database links in your WebCT class, please follow these directions for Adding Persistent Links to Your Web-based Teaching Material.

7) E-Reserves

For information about submitting reserves and related copyright issues, go to Reserves on the library website.

8) More information for faculty

Go to Services for Faculty on the library website.
