What is Faculty Article Delivery?

Faculty Article Delivery (FAD) is a service provided by Hunter Library for use by all Western Carolina University faculty. The purpose of this service is to eliminate the guesswork involved in locating and acquiring scholarly material. You may use FAD when you have a citation or list of citations for which you need the full text. We'll find and retrieve the full text for you, regardless of location (WCU, ASU or UNCA, interlibrary loan, Ingenta, etc.). Requests are accepted and filled in accordance with current copyright laws and guidelines.

The Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified by law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a request if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the request would involve a violation of copyright law.

What may I request?

  • Articles
  • Conference/Symposium Papers
  • Book Chapters

Please note: At this time, we regret that we cannot process requests for books, dissertations/theses, and non-print media (DVDs, videos, CDs). Please use Interlibrary Loan (ILL) for these items.

How do I submit requests?

Requests may be submitted using the Faculty Article Delivery form. You can also send your citations to your departmental liaison. We ask that you prioritize your citations; we will fill them as they are received.

Please note: Requests submitted by graduate students will not be accepted.

What if I do not have a complete citation?

Processing requests takes longer when vital information (e.g. date, page numbers, author, etc.) is missing. Please provide as much information as possible. If you have abbreviated journal titles, do not guess what the correct title may be! Please, ask your departmental liaison or the Reference Desk (828-227-7465) for assistance if you have incomplete citations or abbreviated journal titles.

How long will it take?

Turnaround time depends on the method used to obtain the full text of the item. Requests may be filled by Hunter Library, ASU or UNCA (via ABC Express), or Interlibrary Loan. Requests will be processed within 2 working days, although obtaining the full text may take up to ten business days. Each request will be processed with the intent of providing the most accurate and prompt service.

How will I receive my items?

The majority of items will be made available electronically via e-mail, although campus mail may be used for those items we receive in print from other libraries. ABC Express or the U.S. Postal Service will be used for faculty who do not teach on Cullowhee's campus. It is the responsibility of the faculty member to provide necessary delivery information if articles/papers are to be sent off-campus.

What's next for FAD?

As FAD is a new service, we are beginning the process with the items most often requested by faculty: articles, papers, and book chapters. In the future, Hunter Library plans to accept requests for books, theses/dissertations, audio/video materials, etc.

Who do I contact for further information?

All questions regarding FAD can be directed to Kevin Unrath, Head of Access Services, via email or at 828-227-3405.
