What is Information Literacy?
According to the Association of College and Research Libraries, "Information Literacy is the set of skills needed to find, retrieve, analyze, and use information." (1)
Services for Students

Services for Faculty
Here are a few ways we can help:
Do your students need help finding and evaluating information?
- Your library subject liaisonis available to:Provide customized library instruction for a particular assignment or course. This service works well in a workshop format, in which students have time to work on their individual projects.
- Assist in the design and assessment of a research assignment. Check out some tips for creating effective research assignments.
- Design online research guides for your class
Students and faculty can ask for research assistance any time -- in-person at the Reference Desk, or by phone, email, IM, or individual appointment.Faculty and students can access databases, search the Library Catalog, and find research guidesand tutorials–anytime, anywhere.
Teaching in Asheville, online, or in a land far away?
The Library actively supports distance education courses and programs. Librarians will provide instruction to classes in remote locations, including the online environment. Contact your library liaisonto learn more.
How to schedule a session
Contact your subject liaison or the Coordinator of Information Literacy or fill out the online request form. Library sessions work best when they are designed to support a specific project or assignment(s). Faculty are expected to share information about the assignment and the course with the librarian before the session. English 101 instructors also have an online request form for submitting information about their class and assignments.
A request for an instruction session must be made at least one week before the session is needed. Scheduling of sessions is dependent on the availability of librarians and the library's electronic classroom.
Active participation by the course instructor is important; it helps students understand the connection between information literacy skills and their course content. Faculty are expected to accompany their classes to the library sessions.
