Students may apply for scholarships in construction management
12/21/2006 -

Prospective students interested in undergraduate or graduate study in construction management at Western Carolina University may apply for Kimmel Foundation Scholarships being offered through WCU’s Kimmel School of Construction Management and Technology.

Scholarships that cover the full cost of tuition and fees will be awarded to one North Carolina resident and one out-of-state resident who enroll in WCU’s bachelor’s degree program in construction management. The scholarships can be renewed for a full eight semesters if recipients maintain a certain grade-point average and fulfill other requirements.

Western North Carolina residents will receive preference for the in-state undergraduate scholarship.

Prospective students interested in working toward a master’s degree in construction management may apply for a scholarship that will be awarded to one student who wants to complete the program on campus in one year, or they may apply for scholarships that will be awarded to two students who want to complete WCU’s online program in two years.

Construction management is a professional service that applies effective management techniques to the planning, design and construction of a project from inception to completion for the purpose of controlling time, cost and quality. Construction managers augment the owner’s staff with pre-planning, design, construction, engineering and management expertise to assure the best outcome.

In December 2005, WCU officials announced a commitment of $6.92 million in support for the university’s construction management program from Kimmel & Associates, a leading construction industry executive search firm based in Asheville. The gifts from company founder Joe Kimmel, his family and associates include an endowment of $1 million to fund student scholarships.

University officials also announced the naming of the Joe W. Kimmel School of Construction Management and Technology in recognition of the gifts.

The deadline to apply for Kimmel Foundation Scholarships is April 15, 2007. For more information about the scholarships, click on the Web at www.wcu-cm.org or contact Bradford L. Sims, head of the department of construction management, at (828) 227-2175 or by e-mail at bsims@wcu.edu.
